Chase Tomie and Montana Romeril were the choices for this years selects all-star game. Both players played phenomenally in their respective games and  stood out by leading their teams in points and in defence.  We think they put on a ” Point Guard Clinic”.

Kacey Otto to U of A Pandas

21 Feb

This past month Kacey Otto committed to play Volleyball with the university of Alberta; she will be going to take up the spot of a power left side and will bring a new strength to the team. Her ability to keep focused and stay positive in tight situations made her a number one pick for the university. Though she had many other offers, Kacey believes that the university of Alberta will be the best choice, and the best place for her to maximize her potential and improve her skill.

Are You Training? Or Just Working Out?

    3 Jan

Here is a great article about the differences of training vs working out.

“Do you know the difference between training and workout out? Training is when you have a progressive plan with measurable goals and continual challenges. Working out is anything that makes you sweaty and tired but not necessarily better because it lacks consistency, direction and specificity.”

Healthy Eating Habits To Prevent Injury

    5 Jan

Here is a link to another great article on eating healthy so you can prevent injury

“When you think of ways to prevent the kinds of overuse injuries that commonly affect those who regularly participate in run training—such as runner’s knee or plantar fasciitis—you probably don’t think about nutrition. It’s true that proper nutrition can do little to prevent injuries caused by factors such as over training or wearing the wrong type of running shoes. But specific eating habits can be an effective part of a comprehensive injury-prevention strategy that includes such measures as getting adequate muscle recovery and using the right equipment.”

    Sponsorship Opportunities

    21 Jan

Hey Sports Fans…..what would you say if we told you that Centennial Athletics could be even better than it already is?  I am sure you are thinking…..”what is he talking about”, “who does he think he is”, “where is this coming from?”   I/We want Centennial Athletics to be the hands down best Athletic Program in the City!

Our dream is to have the stands packed for all our home (and away) games.  We would love to look into the stands and see nothing but green, grey and black.

I want little kids running around waiting to be Coyotes and wishing they will play for Centennial one day.  We want grandparents, aunts, uncles and neighbours to attend games.  Basically, We want a small town atmosphere in a big city.

We would love to have local community companies display posters of games and tournaments in their businesses.  We would be elated to have a community presence as well for special events and fundraising.  We are currently running initiatives with our Jr High schools to show them our support.  We would like to run evening sessions on such topics as nutrition, health and wellness, financial wellness, secondary athletic experiences, psychology of sport, and any other topic related to athletics.  Last year, we ran a financial planning session and a wellness evening.  Again, it is all a work in progress.

We are currently working on permanently displaying our main sponsors in our gym and on this website.  Now that you have an idea on where we are heading, I would like to make an offer to local businesses and even individuals.    We would like everyone who is interested in supporting our Athletic Program to have their chance in helping us out.  We run many tournaments, special events and an awesome awards night in June.  We would like to ask anyone who is willing to help out by donating their time, product(s), support, sponsorship, resources and even expertise to contact Ken Zelez (Athletic Director) to discuss the possibilities.

Simply stated, we are looking at bringing the community into our school!  Please pass this message on to those  whom you think would be interested.  Ken Zelez can be reached @ 403-256-8140 ext 2308 or my email kjzelez@cbe.ab.ca.

When Sports Injuries Require Expert Attention.

    15 Feb

Here’s a great article about when it is time to see a medical professional. Dr. Adnan Cutuk gives tips on athletic injuries. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Athletes should seek a medical evaluation if they experience an “upward crescendo” with their pain while being active. Injuries that cause swelling, the loss of range of motion, inability to apply pressure, numbness, or intense pain should be evaluated by a professional. Additionally, medical attention may be required if occasional soreness from an injury progresses to become chronic pain. Acute traumatic injuries may require immediate attention in an emergency department if the injury occurs outside of normal office hours while chronic overuse injuries can easily be evaluated by a primary care physician. Depending on the severity of the injury and if the injury may cause long-term problems, athletes may prefer to be seen by a sports medicine specialist.

The whole article can be see here

    The Science Behind Your Socks.

    16 Feb

Here is a small excerpt from an article that tell the importance of socks when doing physical activity.

Few articles of clothing offer a runner such potential for injury prevention and comfort at so little expense or fuss as socks, simple though they may be. Among the most important attributes of an athletic sock are moisture management, cushioning and dissipation of friction. Remember that the primary role of socks is to protect the foot from the running shoe itself, without contributing to compromises in fit or thermal management. Sock thickness can also be used to fine tune shoe fit. An overview of the fiber choices available may help the next time you’re shopping for stockings.

Rob Hunter Wins Prestigious Basketball Coaching Award

    27 Apr

    The Lawrence King Award:

“Presented annually to a coaching staff member who is not a professional member of the Association but who has, over a significant period of time, made a notable contribution to the coaching of high school basketball”.

Rob has been actively involved in the Calgary basketball community for the past 20 years as a referee and community coach.  His service is well known in both of these areas. Rob began at Centennial an assistant coach for the Junior Boys team.  He coached at this level for three years and have just finished two years at the Sr. Boys level.  We experienced great success including City Championships and a trip to Provincials.  Rob makes a real difference with players.  He relates to them on a personal level and is able to offer advice on how they can improve both on and off the court.  Rob’s greatest contribution to Centennial basketball has been in our community.   It is difficult to quantify the amount of support he has given to Centennial in our community.  It has made a significant difference in Centennial becoming a basketball program we can be proud of.  We look forward to Rob’s contribution for many years to come.

Thank you Rob for making Coyote Athletics a premier athletic program in Calgary.

Fixing a Mistake(s) and Making it Right!

    6 Jul

    The Night of the Coyote

This is overdue, but still important.  Here is the story:

At the Night of the Coyote Awards evening, 3 Sport, 6 Sport and 9 Sport Athletes got a little messed up.  Specifically, it was the grade 11 athletes who participated in 3 and 6 sports who were neglected in terms of reading out their names accurately and correctly. We have traditionally given out Coyote lanyards to 3 Sports Athletes, Coyote key chains to 6 Sport Athletes and 9 Sports Athletes would receive a plaque.

The process was supposed to shake down by having the award winners come up to the stage, receive their award, walk across the stage and back to their seats.  To our knowledge here are the grade 11 athletes who should have received recognition:

    3 Sport Athletes -

     Burns, Ashleigh

    Calvert, Lauren

    Falci, Samantha

    Goldberg, Samuel

    Larose, Bernadette

    Li, Mark

    MacKay, Megan

    Mardon, Todd

    Maye, Michael

    Mazur, Marisa

    Molcak, Broderick

    Ness, Christine

    Pedersen, Kiel

    Shaw, Geoffrey

    Smith, Brody

    Wagenaar, Evan

    Whitney, Kenisha

    Wong, Josh

    Zehir, Altan

    6 Sport Athletes -

    Bartel, Tyler

    Bartel, Teya

    Baun, Kelcey

    Frey, Nathan

    Geck, Joanna

    Kelly, JT

    Morgan, Emma

    Roggeveen, Kaisa

    Saretsky, Emma

We do apologize for the mistake(s).

    Quote of the Day!

    14 Jul

I heard a fantastic quote that I needed to share today!

Here is the background…. My son has been attending a baseball camp for the last 3 half days in Okotoks.  Yesterday at bedtime, he asked me what he should be when he grows up?  I of course answered “Jake, you can be anything you want!  More importantly, you need to be happy with whatever you do.”  Jake immediately responded and said ” I would like to be a Dawg’s baseball player and live in Okotoks”.  I love getting the “real deal”, honest answers from my kids.  They don’t tend to complicate anything.

Ok…on to the quote.  I was picking him up and overheard a few other parents thanking the coaches.  One of the main coaches said something that really was impressive (being in his position).  He of course loves baseball and is trying to offer skills and a passion for the game.  By running a camp, the Dawg’s organization reaches out to the community and promotes baseball (very well, I might add).  Anyway he told a few kids to:

“MAKE SURE YOU PLAY OTHER SPORTS.  OTHER SPORTS WILL HELP YOU WITH THE SKILLS FOR THIS SPORT.  KEEP UP THE HARD WORK”

The coach’s words hit the nail on the head when it comes to multi-sport athletes.  Centennial really values its’ multi-sport athletes.  In fact, there is so much information out that is against sport specialization, that we need to remind ourselves that our children (athletes) need to be just that – athletes!  Allow them to take part in as many sports as they can.  This also goes for high school athletes.  They may never get the chance to play organized sport again.

By the way…. GO DAWGS GO!  If you want to watch some good baseball at a great value, make the short drive out to Okotoks!

    Ankle Braces????

    29 Sep

Here is a great research article about ankle braces:

The Effect of Lace-up Ankle Braces on Injury Rates in High School Football Players.

    Here is a quote:

Among high school football players, we can estimate from this study that approximately 2 to 3 acute ankle injuries could be prevented among a team of 60 players during one season (based on the number needed to treat). Furthermore, if we apply this study’s data to the number of high school football players in the United States the authors estimate that lace-up braces may reduce the number of acute ankle injuries among high school football players by 39,000. The authors propose the lace-up braces represent a cost-effective strategy compared to the costs of tape or not doing anything at all, to prevent acute ankle injuries. This type of research is critical to help demonstrate the benefit of injury prevention strategies.

If you need a brace or want more information, please contact Mr. Zelez – kjzelez@cbe.ab.ca

    Volleyball SuperStar!

    21 Oct

Here is an article that features Team Canada.  If you look at the picture you will recognize Brandon Schmidt who is a former Coyote graduate Volleyball and Track and Field athlete.  See the article and picture below for more details!

Canada finishes far back at Junior Worlds

NITEROI, Brazil – Canada’s men’s U21 squad had to be feeling pretty good about its chances at the World Junior Championships in Brazil in early August.  The Canuck kids had rallied to finish second at the Pan American Cup in Panama City in late June, a real confidence boost.  This was a much bigger event, of course, with the best youth squads on the planet meeting in Brazil, not just a smattering of NORCECA teams. Canada boasted some decent talent, too, and was again led by venerable mentor Georges Laplante of Montreal. Assistants Greg Barthel and Brad Poplawski were also on hand.

We’d like to tell you there was another podium appearance for our guys, but it wasn’t to be. By the time we got un-tracked in Brazil, it was too late. We even-tually settled for 11th.

Let’s go back to the start, a “nervous” one according to Canadian captain T.J.  Sanders, this being our first World championships. Iran took it to us, winning in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-20), thanks in large part to some 30 Canadian errors.  Canada was plagued by mistakes throughout the tourney, which is the mark of many young teams. “Young ath-letes try to make too many perfect shots, same thing in serving,” coach Laplante explained after. “As a coach you have to cope with it. We tried in practices to make fewer mistakes, but it’s always different in a game situation.”

Two against Belgium was an-other disappointing affair, the Belgians romping 25-23, 25-22 and 25-17. Captain Sanders was more upbeat after, saying, “We came out to play with energy and passion, but we started losing energy as the match went on. It just wasn’t our day.” Canada turned it up against undefeated Serbia in its final pool match, this time going the full five sets. Admittedly, we let it go at the end, the tiebreaker finishing a lopsided 15-4. That sent Canada to the consolation round, with ninth place our best hope.

Tristan Aubry and Nicholas Hoag led Canada with 16 points each against Serbia, with Lucas Van Berkel delivering eight blocks. Laplante was pleased with the ef-fort of all his charges, saying, “I think this shows more of what we are able to do.” We kicked off consolation play with an easy 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14 win over Japan, a country we’ve traditionally feasted on. Aubry was again in top form, notch-ing 14 points. “It was good to see the smiles back on the players’ faces,” Laplante said later.

We then eked out a narrow, five-set win over Egypt, the fifth set finishing 15-11, and then bettered Tunisia in four to advance to the consolation semi-final.  Tommy Belisle had the hot hand against Tunisia, counting a whopping 26 points.  Canada got off to a great start against Germany in its next-to-last outing, taking the opener 25-16. But the Germans were relentless the rest of the way, which found us playing Japan once again in our finale.  Again we won in straight sets, with Belisle racking up 18 more points. Japan’s 31 errors helped our cause. “We went 4-1 in the second and third round,” a relieved Laplante noted. “That was really good for us.”

He also took a moment to praise Canadian supporters, who are never shy at such events. “Don’t forget to write about all the parents that came to cheer for us,” he said. “It was great – we had the best crowd of the championships every match.”

Who was best on the court? You are probably thinking Brazil, but that wasn’t the case, the hosts finishing far back in fifth. It was many-time champion Russia outlasting top-ranked Argentina in the final, with Serbia edging the U.S. for bronze.  Little Puerto Rico, a semi-finalist at the Pan American Cup, finished bottom of the heap.

    Jr. Football Gets Praise

    2 Nov

Here is a great story about the Jr. Boys football team.

The Jr. Boys played a game earlier on in the season had some awesome feedback from some spectators. A mother who works at a school in the CSSD district said that she was very impressed on how nice the boys were when the game was becoming a blow out. She mentioned that she was overly impressed with the conduct that the entire Jr. Boys Football team displayed.

This parent felt compelled to call our school and give praise to our coaches and team. We take these sort of COMPLIMENTS  very seriously as it fits our new athletics motto to the “T”. Incase you didn’t know our athletic motto is EXCELLENCE, SPORTSMANSHIP AND CITIZENSHIP.

Please take the time to congratulate members of the junior football team and their coaches, Brandon Chmilar and Sharir Ali, on an impressive playoff win last night.  The boys won 27-17 and conducted themselves with great poise and class throughout the game.  A perfect example of what we want in our student athletes.  Congrats.

    Great Season!

    9 Nov

Congratulations to the Sr. Football team and staff on their fantastic end to their season last night. Although the boys lost by only one point, the coaches have seen the football program develop into one of the best in the city over the time that this group of grad 12′s started three years ago. The Boys’ faces after the games showed the kind of determination and hard work that they, their coaches, have put in throughout the last three years. Hats off to you guys, simply outstanding!

Are Athletic Trainers a Good Form of Social Support?

    23 Nov

    Posted: 22 Nov 2011 09:30 PM PST

Injured Athlete’s Perceptions About Social Support Approximately 17 million sports-related injuries occur annually in the United States and while these injuries inflict physical harm there are also psychological ramifications to dealing with these injuries. While some research has been done on this subject, only 2 studies have specifically assessed the perception of social support among injured athletes during the course of rehabilitation. Therefore Clement and Shannon, completed a study to determine injured athlete’s perceptions regarding satisfaction, availability, and contribution for 8 types of social support (i.e., listening support, emotional support, emotional-challenges support, reality confirmation, task-appreciation support, task-challenge support, tangible support, and personal assistance) from coaches, athletic trainers, and team-mates.

This post is a follow up from a tweet from the weekend. Here is the background:

The Jr. Girls Basketball team were complemented on their great sportsmanship this past weekend when they were playing a team that were not very strong. This compliment came from parents who were from the other team.

The Sr. Boys basketball team were also complemented on their great attitude when the game was tight. This compliment came from a referee.

We love to hear these statements, they are almost better than winning. By the way both teams won!

    Football Parents Meeting

    9 Dec

Here are the notes from this weeks football parent meeting about the inter-provincial trip. The next meeting is January 10th @ 6:30. Mr. Sandbeck’s e-mails is at the bottom of this message.

    1. Welcome and Introductions

    - In attendance; Adam Sandbeck, Wayne South. Murray Davidson, Greg Warnock, Barb Olson, Peter and Cindy Von Gradulewski, Rochelle Cooper, Nute Jensen, Sheri Bruneau, Suzie Brady, Sherry Boath

    2. Trip Update (From Schools Perspective)

    - The trip would likely occur on the 7th, 8th and 9th of September with the possibility of missing either the 6th or 10th due to travel.

    - We have emailed BCFootball about the potential of a game on these dates; they will circulate our request to all high school coaches in BC.

    - We also have contact for South Delta School.  Two years ago, Bowness High School travelled to BC and played a jamboree at their school.  Garth Melrose, a coach at our school, attended this trip and it may be possible to do something similar.

    - All paper work for the trip must be turned into the CBE by the end of February in order for the approval process to move forward.

    - We would also like to visit some CIS post-secondary programs, get tours of their facilities and maybe watch a game.  As well, there might be a possibility to see a CFL game.

    3. Parent Feedback/ Questions

    - Parents were in full support of touring a CIS campus and looking at their football program.

    - A suggestion was brought forward about leaving Thursday evening and driving straight through the night.

    - Questions were asked about a variety of details for the trip.  What where to happen if it was cancelled? (Fundraised fees would be returned, minus required deposits) What is the “drop dead” date to confirm their sons attendance (Probably June 2012).

    - What would supervision be like?  (Coaches on the senior football team would be the primary supervisors with the possibility of parents being approached to fill the remaining ratio spots)

    - Billeting or Hotels? Adam prefers hotels – they are easier to get approved through the CBE and allow direct supervision.

    4. Fundraising

    - Adam brought forward the idea of having a two man scramble golf tournament – given to us by Chris Jones.  We could have a silent auction, charge an entry fee, get prizes donated, etc.

^ Received support, we will go forward with looking into the costs associated with this.

    - Suzie Brady suggested having a meeting geared towards fundraising – prospective fundraising events would be presented to parents and parents would decide which one they wished to proceed with.  That meeting will occur January 10th, 2012 at 6:30 in E108.

    - Adam will research Bow River Foods (meat sales); coco brooks pizza and spolumbos and present them at this meeting.  Any other suggestions are welcome for consideration, an overview and profit margin would need to be presented at the January meeting.

    - Parents liked the idea of running two fundraisers; one large fundraiser for the team whereby the money would be evenly split amongst all attending players, and one where each player would raise money for themselves to put towards the costs of the trip.

    5. Timetable moving forward

    - Next meeting will be held January 10th, 2012 at 6:30 in E107.

    - Fundraising will be the primary topic discussed.

    Meeting adjourned at 7:15

Parent contact information was collected from those present.  If you wish to be on the email list please email Coach Sandbeck at awsandbeck@cbe.ab.ca with your name and email and you will be added to the primary distribution list.
